Poynton Live Gig Review
Fish Lip Soup at Poynton Community Centre
Surrounded by sound as we are these days we get used to hearing compression, sampling and all the other digital doo-dahs as if it were normal when in fact it isn’t. I say this because it’s a good while now since I last listened to the sound of a large swing band and that big fat brass sound really does make quite an impact. And Fish Lip Soup proved this in no small way at their recent Community Centre gig.
Wisely choosing a popular programme of swing favourites and crowd pleasers, this big band and their energetic leader Kyran Matthews delivered a succession of great tunes from the likes of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ted Heath and many others to the evident pleasure of their enthusiastic audience.
And when vocalist Jenn Clempner came out to front the band she effortlessly carried the mood forwards, even when taking a step into a more contemporary vein with a Norah Jones classic. All in all a thoroughly good time and a tribute to the great effort put into everything by the hard working ensemble!
